Scripture That’s Been on My Mind This Week…

“Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.”
1 Corinthians 4:2 KJV

Dependability and trustworthiness: these two meanings are wrapped up in the Greek word that the verse above translates as “faithful.”  Important character traits for those who are stewards.

Yet maybe more important is the word “stewards.”  It’s not simply a servant.  It’s a manager of a household.  In days of the New Testament, the wealthy would have a steward who managed the affairs of the home and even the financial and business affairs of the owner of the home.  Being a steward required a person of dependability and trustworthiness.

The steward owned none of that for which he was responsible.  He was a caretaker for another person’s property.

Understanding what it means to be a “steward” changes everything!

When I see myself as a steward of the property of another, I begin to care for it with more dependability and more trustworthiness.  I become much more accountable.

I view everyone and everything differently.  The people I know, whether friend or acquaintance, are important to God.  They are His!

They bear the image of the Most High God, they may be fellow followers of Christ, and as image bearers and fellow disciples of Jesus, they deserve my utmost dependability and trustworthiness as I relate to them.

The property that I have takes on new meaning and, maybe for the first time, appropriate responsibility for that property.  I see everything as something belonging to God.  He’s just given it to me to use for my benefit and to care for with trustworthiness and dependability.

Without doubt, as I see what it means to be a “steward,” the way I treat everyone and everything becomes a responsibility that requires my faithfulness to God.
